Lightweight Organic Soil Amendment for Aeration, Drainage & Potting Mix Structure

Create a lighter, more open growing medium with Soil Sunrise Horticultural Grade Rice Hulls. These lightweight plant-based particles can be mixed into potting soil and custom growing media to increase air space, improve drainage, and help reduce compaction.

Ideal for houseplants, vegetables, herbs, flowers, raised beds, container gardens, seed-starting mixes, and custom potting blends, rice hulls provide a natural alternative for growers looking to add structure and porosity to their soil.

Key Benefits:

  • Improves Aeration: Helps create additional pore space throughout potting mixes for a lighter, more open growing medium.
  • Supports Drainage: Adds structure that allows excess water to move more freely through the soil.
  • Lightweight Soil Amendment: Adds structure without significantly increasing the weight of containers or potting mixes.
  • Versatile Growing-Media Ingredient: Suitable for houseplants, vegetables, herbs, flowers, containers, raised beds, and custom soil blends.
  • Easy to Mix & Use: Blend with potting soil, peat moss, coconut coir, compost, or other growing-media ingredients.

What Are Horticultural Rice Hulls?

Rice hulls are the lightweight outer coverings removed from rice grains during processing. In horticulture, they can be incorporated into soil and potting media as a plant-based structural amendment.

Their shape and lightweight texture help create spaces within the growing medium, improving airflow and drainage while reducing the density of heavier soil mixtures. Unlike mineral amendments such as perlite or pumice, rice hulls are an organic material and will gradually break down over time.

How to Use Horticultural Rice Hulls:

  1. Prep the pot:

Clear debris and fluff the top layer.
  2. Blend into mix:

Blend hulls at ~¼ volume with potting mix or garden beds.
  3. Top-dress:

Spread a 2" blanket over finished plantings.
  4. Water thoroughly:

Soak the amended soil so hulls settle and begin releasing nutrients.
  5. Refresh seasonally:
Add a light layer or mix in fresh hulls each spring to maintain drainage and fertility.

Because rice hulls gradually decompose, growing media may be refreshed or amended again over time as needed.

Where Can I Use Horticultural Grade Rice Hulls?

Indoor Houseplants:
Mix into potting soil to create a lighter, more aerated growing medium.

Vegetables & Herbs:
Incorporate into container mixes, raised beds, or garden soil to add structure.

Flowers & Ornamentals:
Use in potting mixes for flowering plants and ornamental container gardens.

Seed Starting & Propagation:
Add as one component of a lightweight growing medium when additional aeration is desired.

Raised Beds & Container Gardens:
Blend with soil, compost, and other amendments to help maintain a loose soil structure.

Custom Soil Blends:
Combine with peat moss, coco coir, bark, compost, or other growing-media ingredients when creating your own specialty soil blend.

How Much Horticultural Grade Rice Hulls Do I Need?

Choose the bag size that best fits your potting or repotting projects. The actual amount needed will vary depending on container size, proportion of rice hulls used, and how much growing media is needed for each plant.

4 qt: Several houseplants, containers, or small soil-mixing projects.
8 qt: Larger plant collections, raised beds, or frequent soil blending.

I bought these rice holes because it seemed like a fair price for the quantity and I wanted to try out using rice holes in my garden and not buy a whole giant package yet. These rice holes do the job but I grow in an indoor environment and the amount of dust that was created when I was placing the rice holes in the pots was concerning because I’m indoors it’s very important that I don’t get any particles, etc., in the air. They seem to be decent quality although I don’t have any other companies to compare it with. I really just wish they were less dusty.

I was in a desperate place with fungus gnats swarming my indoor plants. After following tons of useless advice (I.e. "Keep the topsoil dry!" and "Buy that Neem oil!!") and seeing no positive results, I have resorted to using the rice hulls. This is what I did first:1. Dowse the soil with a mix of water + hydrogen peroxide to kill off larvae. The solution will NOT kill the adult gnats, but at least it will wipe out larvae (the next generation of gnats). I saw the adult gnats (those pests scurrying about on the top soil in panic).2. Add a THICK layer (0.75 inch to 1 inch) of rice hulls on the top soil. Make sure to cover every spot - this rice hull is meant to be a PHYSICAL BARRIER 24/7. Don't expose any areas of topsoil or you're basically opening a door to the gnats all over again.3. Sit back and feel inherently satisfied that you've (hopefully) outsmarted them. With this thick physical barrier, I don't see how these gnats can find their way to the soil again... but let's not get ahead of myself here. I will give it a few weeks and post on here if anything changes. The 4-quart bag was a good size for the three pots I have (photo included). 2 are huge pots, and 1 is medium sized pot.Hope this review helps!

These were not that bad to work with as a top soil. I've yet to try to use them as a perlite replacement though. I've done some heavy watering with them and they will move but not float, but with Light watering they will stay put and the water will trickle through to the soil layer easily. They do not stop fungus gnats completely but you wont see them hanging out in the hulls, they will always find a way though lol.

Great quality, size and value. Rice hull bag was damaged upon arrival but packing all seemed fine. I just moved it all into gallon ziplock bags which was better anyway.
