Natural Mineral Soil Amendment for Gardens, Containers & Potting Mixes

Soil Sunrise Greensand Soil Additive is a natural mineral-based soil amendment that can be incorporated into potting mixes, garden beds, raised beds, and other growing media. Greensand is valued by gardeners for its mineral content and its ability to become part of a long-term soil improvement program.

Use greensand when preparing new soil blends, amending existing garden soil, or supplementing container mixes. Its fine mineral texture blends easily with other soil ingredients and can be used alongside compost, worm castings, and other amendments.

Key Benefits:

  • Natural Mineral Amendment: A mineral-based addition for potting soil, garden beds, raised beds, and landscape soils.
  • Slow-Release Soil Supplement: Greensand breaks down gradually rather than acting as a fast-release fertilizer.
  • Versatile Application: Mix into new soil, incorporate into existing beds, or use as part of a custom potting blend.
  • Easy to Blend: Fine-textured material distributes readily throughout soil and growing media.

What Is Greensand?

Greensand is a naturally occurring mineral material commonly used as a soil amendment. Unlike fast-acting fertilizers, it is generally used as part of a longer-term soil-building approach.

It can be combined with ingredients such as compost, worm castings, peat moss, coconut coir, perlite, pumice, and other soil amendments when creating a custom growing medium.

How to Use Greensand:

  1. Prepare Soil:
Till soil (6–8” in outdoor gardens).

  2. Apply Greensand:
Sprinkle evenly over the prepared areas.

  3. Mix Thoroughly:
Use gardening tool to mix Greensand into soil.

  4. Water:
Water and mix soil well to help Greensand integrate into soil.

  5. Plant:
Simply plant crop and watch it blossom!

Where Can I Use Greensand?

Indoor Houseplants:
Mix into potting soil to create a lighter, more open growing medium.

Raised Beds & Gardens:
Mix with existing soil, compost, and other amendments during bed preparations.

Vegetable Gardens:
Incorporate into garden soil before planting as part of a broader amendment program.

Herbs & Flowers:
Use in beds and containers where a mineral-based soil amendment is desired.

Container Plants:
Add as one component of a custom growing medium rather than relying on greensand as the primary fertilizer.

Custom Soil Blends:
Combine with organic and mineral ingredients when developing specialized potting and garden blends.

How Much Greensand Do I Need?

Choose the bag size that best fits your potting or repotting projects. The actual amount needed will vary depending on container size, number of plants, and how much growing media is needed for each plant.

1lb: Individual containers, small beds, or occasional use.
2lb: Raised beds, small gardens, or multiple planting projects.
5lb: Larger gardens, landscaping, lawns, or frequent soil blending.

I bought greensand from the compostable box company ( can’t think of the name), and it was very clearly a green color. This was more brown. I haven’t looked into it to see if that’s an attribute or not, but just pointing it out. As far as quality? It’s not a light bulb…Hopefully I’ll know more before I buy. I bought it because the price was right and hope it does what it’s supposed to. I’ve been specializing in “fahne” compost and ran out of the other, so thought I’d give it a shot. I also hoped the color wasn’t so much of an issue as I had read up ( just a little) on color variation in greensand. So… tmi, I know. But the price was right, it came without holes in the container, and unless the color is an issue, it’s fine.

Thank you to the Soil Sunrise Store for offering Greensand here on Amazon as I was unable to find it locally this year. I notice that this Soil Sunrise product was blended in KentuckyGardeners often use greensand to amend soil when it could benefit from Manganese. Personally, I use it in my own blend of seedling mix. Also, I add a bit to the planting spot for my tomatoes, which love it, and I find that it intensifies their flavor. Greensand is a slow-release fertilizer. It helps the soil store calcium, potassium and the manganese which will be of benefit throughout the plants life. A little goes a long way. I add greensand 1 cup at a time; but, I’m mixing roughly 4-5 cubic feet of seed starter mix in a wheelbarrow. If I were doing small batch potting or garden planting, I’d figure 2 tablespoons to a roughly a gallon of potting mix.Tip: Consider setting your bag of Sun Soil Greensand into a gallon size zip bag BEFORE opening the greensand. The product bag is difficult to re-zip and the greensand is very powdery. You don’t want to lose any precious bit of this garden magic.

Most people, including me have never heard of greensand much less know what it does.

Most people, including me have never heard of greensand much less know what it does.I’ve this last summer, I started the process of doing everything organic and natural, including fertilizers (of which many are man made and will lower populations of “natures good guys.)”As the end of the season came around, I realized despite all the organic forms of fertilizer I bought and applied, I had not applied very much if any “K” in the “N-P-K” ratio (N-Nitrogen, P-Phosphorous, and K-Potassium). This occurred to me as my tomatoes and other veggies started flowering/fruiting, knowing the Potassium is essential in this last phase, as well as serving many other essential plant processes. So I went looking for organic single ingredient fertilizers high in potassium and found very few candidates. Which was a surprise considering how many of the same type of products available containing high amounts of nitrogen, or phosphorus. One of those products was greensand which is derived from ancient marine mineral beds which spoke to its high quality. It’s known to slowly release nutrients (potassium, calcium, magnesium, and other micronutrients) into the soil. This worried me since I applied it so late in the season, but I was shocked at how well it worked! 7/8 of my 4-5 foot tall tomato plants had been infested with several pests and accompanying issues, which equated to brown dried out leaves with no green from the ground up to about 4 feet. I applied this as a last ditch effort to get at least a tomato or two and was shocked at the results! The plants started growing healthy, green leaves and branches above the completely desolate 4 feet of stem and was actually growing blooms and tomatoes. It was like they were freshly planted, without a pest in site, all within about 2 1/2 weeks from adding this product into the top couple inches of soil and watering in. Would totally spread the word about this amazing product!
