1. Choose a Healthy Plant

Start with a citronella plant that has vibrant green leaves, firm stems, and no obvious signs of pests, yellowing, or wilting. Citronella is often sold as citronella geranium, also called Pelargonium citrosum, or as citronella grass, such as Cymbopogon nardus. Both are fragrant, but they have different growth habits, so choose the one that best fits your space.

2. Pick the Right Location

Citronella grows best in a bright outdoor location with plenty of sunlight. Aim for at least 6 hours of sun per day. A sunny patio, porch, balcony, or garden bed is usually a good fit. If you live in a very hot climate, a little afternoon shade can help prevent the plant from drying out too quickly.

3. Use a Well-Draining Soil Mix

Citronella likes soil that holds some moisture but still drains well. Avoid heavy, compacted soil that stays wet for too long, as this can lead to root problems.

For container growing, use a quality outdoor potting mix with good drainage. A blend with ingredients like perlite, bark, compost, or other aerating materials can help keep the roots healthier.

4. Plant It Properly

• For containers: Choose a pot with drainage holes. Add soil, place the plant at the same depth it was growing in its nursery pot, then fill around the root ball and water thoroughly.
• For garden beds: Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, backfill with soil, gently firm it in place, and water well.

5. Water Consistently

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially while the plant is getting established. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Citronella does not like sitting in soggy soil, so always allow excess water to drain away. Container-grown plants may need more frequent watering during hot summer weather.

6. Feed Lightly During the Growing Season

Citronella does not need heavy feeding. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring, or feed lightly during the active growing season according to the fertilizer label. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can encourage weak, overly soft growth.

7. Prune for Fuller Growth

Pinch or trim back leggy stems to encourage a fuller, bushier plant. Regular pruning also helps keep citronella looking tidy in containers. Remove yellowing leaves, damaged stems, or spent growth as needed throughout the season.

8. Protect It from Cold Weather

Citronella is sensitive to frost. In colder climates, grow it in a container so it can be moved indoors before temperatures drop. Place it near a bright window and reduce watering slightly during winter, allowing the soil to dry a bit more between waterings.

Does Citronella Really Repel Mosquitoes?

Citronella is famous for its lemony fragrance, but simply having the plant nearby may not be enough to keep mosquitoes away completely. The scent is strongest when the leaves are brushed, crushed, or disturbed. Think of citronella as a helpful aromatic patio plant, not a full replacement for other mosquito-control methods.
