Porous Soil Amendment for Improved Drainage, Aeration & Potting Mix Structure

Customize your growing media with Soil Sunrise Horticultural Charcoal Soil Additive. This lightweight, porous material can be blended into potting mixes to help create additional air space, improve drainage, and contribute to a looser, more open soil structure.

Ideal for houseplants, orchids, aroids, tropical plants, terrariums, container gardens, and custom potting mixes, horticultural charcoal is a versatile ingredient for growers who want greater control over the texture and structure of their growing media.

Key Benefits:

  • Improves Soil Structure: Adds coarse, porous particles that help keep potting mixes open and less compact.
  • Supports Drainage & Aeration: Helps create additional air space while allowing excess water to move through the growing medium.
  • Porous Growing-Media Ingredient: Its naturally porous structure makes horticultural charcoal a useful component in chunky and specialty potting mixes.
  • Versatile Soil Amendment: Suitable for houseplants, orchids, aroids, tropical plants, terrariums, container gardening, and custom soil recipes.
  • Easy to Mix & Use: Blend with potting soil, bark, coco coir, perlite, or other growing-media ingredients to create a mix suited to your plants.

What Is Horticultural Charcoal?

Horticultural charcoal is a lightweight, porous carbon material used as a component in plant-growing media. Its coarse texture helps create spaces within a potting mix, contributing to improved airflow and drainage around the root zone.

It is commonly combined with ingredients such as potting soil, bark, coconut coir, perlite, pumice, peat moss, and other growing-media components when creating custom blends for plants that benefit from an open, well-aerated root environment.

How to Use Horticultural Charcoal:

  1. Choose your growing medium. Start with potting soil or the other ingredients in your custom plant mix.
  2. Add charcoal as needed according to the drainage and texture needs of the plants you are growing.
  3. Mix thoroughly to distribute the charcoal evenly throughout the growing medium.
  4. Adjust the amount for the plant. Plants that prefer a chunkier, more aerated growing medium may benefit from a greater proportion of charcoal.
  5. Water according to your plant's needs after planting or repotting.

Where Can I Use Horticultural Charcoal?

Indoor Houseplants:
Mix into potting soil to create a lighter, more open growing medium.

Aroids & Tropical Plants:
Combine with bark, perlite, coco coir, and other ingredients to add texture and porosity to chunky plant mixes.

Orchids:
Use as a component in bark-based or other open orchid growing media where additional structure and airflow are desired.

Terrariums:
Incorporate into custom terrarium substrates as part of a layered or mixed growing medium.

Container Gardening:
Blend with potting media used in indoor and outdoor containers to adjust drainage and soil structure.

Custom Soil Blends:
Use alongside other soil amendments to create growing media tailored to the needs of specific plants.

How Much Horticultural Charcoal Do I Need?

Choose the bag size that best fits your potting or repotting projects. The actual amount needed will vary depending on container size, number of cuttings, and how much growing media is needed for each plant.

2 qt: Small projects, individual plants, or experimenting with custom mixes.
4 qt: Several small houseplants or light soil-amending, or experimenting with custom mixes.
8 qt: Multiple houseplants or medium-sized repotting projects.
12 qt: Larger collections, terrariums, or frequent soil mixing.
30 qt: Bulk soil blending, large plant collections, or larger gardening projects.

While it absorbs water well and releases it slowly back to the plants, I was disappointed by the size of the charcoal I received. Even the photos from other buyers who complained about the charcoal size show larger, more defined chunks. The product I received was almost entirely powder.

This looks like good quality charcoal. unfortunately the pieces in the package I received are much smaller than shown in some of the pictures please see the attached. So it's probably a good choice for general soil amendment, not ideal if you're looking for larger pieces for orchids that like larger chunks, which is what I hoped for based on the pictures, particularly the one showing the larger chunks in the hands.

This is my go to charcoal for adding to soil for house plants. I’ve purchased it several times and really like the granule size, as it mixes well into my potting soil. There is no odor, although it can be a bit messy as the charcoal will stain in your hands if you’re not wearing gloves. Much like my cooking, I don’t really measure anything. I add a couple of tablespoons of charcoal to a small bucket of soil, and that seems to do the trick. The charcoal incorporates well into the soil. Adding charcoal to soil helps oxygen to be redistributed to the soil, allowing for plant roots to thrive - it can also help potted plants by improving their drainage.

This is a good product. The charcoal is chopped quite small, but not too finely, and works well in all sizes of planters/pots. For the price advertised, I felt this was a very good value and would certainly purchase it again. Horticultural charcoal is essential to keep your indoor plants happy; the charcoal absorbs excess moisture and helps to prevent root rot. I am very happy with this purchase, and recommend it wholeheartedly.

Lasts a while, you would think it would not because the bag is seriously small. For the price it’s crazy to spend that much for something so small but here we are. It’s for my plants so I pamper them .Comes in flakes, small and easy to crush. Helps with drainage, and good for the plants.

I’ve bought this multiple times for my indoor plant chunky mixes and I love it. The charcoal is clean, good quality, and mixes in really well with bark and other substrates. My plants seem to do great with it, and I like using it to help keep my soil mix airy and fresh. Consistently good quality every time I reorder. Great value and definitely a staple in my plant supplies. Color is consistent and appearance as expected.
